23rd june 2012 - mental health law reform: new perspectives and challenges
The Centre for Disability Law and Policy, in association with the School of Law, NUI Galway and Amnesty International Ireland hosted a conference on the 23rd of June in Aras Moyola, NUI Galway on the topic of "Mental Health Law Reform: New Perspectives and Challenges".
The conference was aimed at service users, legal practitioners, mental health professionals, advocates, academics, policy makers, politicians, NGOs and any person or organization interested in mental health law and policy.
The Department of Health is currently undertaking a review of the Mental Health Act 2001. This conference examined issues relevant to this review, including Ireland’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) as it moves towards ratification. The conference heard from leading national and international experts on mental health law and policy. The conference also heard from an expert panel on mental health in Ireland, which will be composed of a service user, psychiatrist, family member and legal practitioner. A member of the Steering Group on the Review of the Mental Health Act 2001 also was in attendance and spoke about the in Interim Report released just days before the Conference.
