We welcome interns and volunteers and have initiated a programme to facilitate the same.
We welcome clinical placements from the Law School at NUI Galway. Academic credit is available within the NUI Galway Law School for such placements. The Centre views this programme as important in give law students an experiential opportunity toresearch issues that have practical relevance in the lives of persons with disabilities. Previous interns under this programme have worked on the European Yearbook on Disability Law & Policy as well as drafted an amicus brief to the European Court of Human Rights on the issue of legal capacity. Applicants are expected to apply in the first instance to the Law School for a placement. Summer 2009
An intern from William and Mary School of Law, Katherine Talalas, will be working on the Baseline Study of Disability in Ireland during summer 2009. She will examine the focal points and co-ordinating mechanisms for implementing National Disability Strategies in a range of comparative jurisdictions across all continents. An analysis of the interaction between domestic National Disability Strategies, Regional Disability Action Plans and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will also be part of Katherine’s work at the Centre.

Brid Ni GhrainneBrid Ni Ghrainne, a final year Bachelor of Civil Law student, conducted research in the centre as part of NUIG's clinical placement module. Brid was researching the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This involved summarising the process leading up to the ratification of the treaty, setting out the declarations and reservations to the treaty, and summarising the process of ratification in individual countries.
Ciara DuffyCiara Duffy, a 3rd Bachelor of Civil Law student, worked with Gerard Quinn on a paper on the Tribunal Cases concerning discrimination against people with disabilities in employment.
The Centre hosts limited clinical placements from other international law schools and have accepted placements from Northeastern Law School (Boston MA). This programme is an important element of the work of the Centre and interns are highly valued members of the research community. Previous interns under this programme have worked on researching amicus briefs and legal developing databases in the broad field of disability. If interested in such a placement you should contact your own School for practical arrangements as well as the Director.
