Dr. Soumitra Pathare is currently a Consultant Psychiatrist at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, India
and Co-ordinator, Center for Mental Health Law and Policy at the Indian Law
Society, Pune, India. He has served as a WHO consultant in many low-income
countries assisting them in developing mental health policy and drafting and
implementing mental health legislation. He (along with his colleagues from the
Center for Mental Health Law and Policy) is currently assisting the Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in drafting new mental health
legislation. He has co-authored the WHO Resource Book on Mental Health Law and
Human Rights and has contributed to the WHO Mental Health Policy and Service
Guidance Package.
Dr Soumitra Pathare did his undergraduate medical training and post-graduate
psychiatry training at the Seth G S Medical College and King Edward Memorial
Hospital, Mumbai. He has an MD in Psychiatry from Mumbai University, India. He
is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, United Kingdom and worked at
Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, London, UK for nearly 8 years in various
clinical and research posts.
Dr Soumitra Pathare lives in Pune, India, is married to Seema, a gynaecologist
- turned - farmer, and has two boys, Upamanyu aged 14 and Aaryaman aged 9.
