Aisling’s Ph.D. is funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and is entitled ’ Genetic Discrimination by Employers and Insurance Companies- Towards a European Regulatory Framework’.
This topic will explore the issues surrounding genetic discrimination by employers and insurance companies in light of the new era of genetic investigation and rapidly advancing technologies. The research will analyse the ethical, social and legal considerations arising in formulating an appropriate regulatory framework, particularly at European level. Accordingly, potential harms and benefits of genetic testing be weighed, together with the values placed on privacy, justice and fundamental human rights. The project will explore the problems facing employers and insurers by using genetic testing and the urgent need for reform of the law. On examining the current regulatory response, proposals for reform will be made, in the form of a European Directive.
Aisling graduated from NUI, Galway with a BCL in 2005, and graduated from University College Cork with a LLM in 2006. She trained as a Solicitor in a large commercial firm (from 2006 to 2009), having specialised in Employment Law for the majority of her traineeship. She tutored Land Law at NUI, Galway 2009-2010. She also lectured the law course for the nursing degree at NUI, Galway 2009-2010.
She worked as a Research Assistant at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy 2009-2010, working on a project entitled ’The New Transatlantic Agenda and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities- Taking the US/EU Dialogue to a New Level’ (March 2010).
