Thesis
Maria’s thesis is entitled "A comparative analysis of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities across the diverse jurisdictions of New Zealand, USA, People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Ireland"
Maria spent 5 months in both New Zealand and USA during 2007-2008 researching disability law and policy and the implications for the lives of people with disabilities - looking in particular at the each States’ process in considering the signing and ratifying of the Convention and the condition of readiness of national law and policy in meeting the requirements of the Convention. She has now turned her attention to People’s Republic of China, and will begin researching on Ireland in September 2009.
Maria is exploring the concept of personhood by focusing on Articles 12, 19, 24, 25 and 27 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She is paying particular attention to the area of dignity, legal capacity and supported decision making provisions.
