Article 32 of the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) highlights a range of actions/measures to be undertaken by States Parties to support inclusive development.
Mary is undertaking research to to provide a comparative analysis of models that currently exist on the inclusion of disability within development aid funding and programs. This is with a view to informing Irish policy makers and funders on effective methods of including people with disabilities in its future development strategy. This doctoral research is supported by the Higher Education Authority PRTLI fund.
Mary works with the Center for International Rehabilitation as International Coordinator on the International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM), the IDRM is an international network that has been monitoring and reporting on the human rights of people with disabilities since 2001. Mary was responsible for coordinating the 2007 IDRM Regional Report for Europe. She has also worked with Concern Worldwide and Mobility International USA as a technical expert on their Building an Inclusive Development Community. She has also worked in a variety of national Irish NGOs within the disability sector and was a member of the Disability Leglisative Consultative Group that made reccomendations to the Irish government on the Disability Bill which became the Disability Act 2005.
Mary has an passionate interest in disability and development issues and is a member of the Dochas International Disability and Development group. She was also a recipentent of a 2008 Social Entreprenuer Award for a project that will focus on recruiting people with disabilities as volunteers to share expertise and learn from their disabled colleagues in the developing world.
