The Challenge of Diversity: Teaching, Support and Student Learning’ Conference

A number of presenters from the parallel sessions at our recent annual international conference have agreed to make their presentations and/or full papers available.

This event was funded by the Higher Education Authority and was a collaboration between NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth and DIT.

The keynote presentations are all accessible from our webcasts page. As these mostly use Microsoft Producer for PowerPoint, they require Internet Explorer to view. Two conference speakers participated by videoconference and we had extensive live discussions, but these links only provide access to the presentation itself.

Conference Themes:

Presentations and posters at the conference encompassed the following themes:

• the learning and support needs of non-traditional learners in higher education;
• the support needs of academic staff in relation to learning, teaching and assessment in the context of an increasingly diverse student body
• the development of diverse and discipline-specific methods to support the retention and successful participation of non-traditional learners.
• models of student learning support for both traditional and non-traditional learners; and
• approaches to teaching that foster greater active learner engagement (for both traditional and non-traditional learners).

Non-traditional learners include socio-economically disadvantaged students, mature students, students with a disability, part-time students, students who are members of the Traveller community or minority ethnic groups, and international students.
