The aims of the Postgraduate Certificate are to build a firm understanding of the key issues in teaching, learning and assessment in higher education, and to encourage the development of reflective practice within a scholarly and research-informed approach to teaching. This module provides an important first grounding in some key practical aspects of teaching and learning as well as a basic introduction to some underlying theoretical concepts.
The induction session will start with the general context: how has higher education changed in the past two decades in Ireland, and how is it likely to change in the near future? An overview of contemporary change in higher education and issues that have relevance for classroom practices will be provided. The first session of the course will set out some theoretical concepts and philosophies of teaching and learning, grounded within the Irish context. From the second session onwards, the course will become more focused on what NUIG teachers are doing in classrooms. The sessions will have input from various ‘practitioners’ from different subject areas who will talk about how they have incorporated a particular approach into their teaching.
The participants will also be divided into groups of 3-4, and for one half hour of each session will discuss issues arising from their learning journals. The group discussions will also give participants the chance to discuss the issues being raised on the course, share experiences with each other, and form supportive networks.
