The inaugurated President's Awards for Teaching Excellence recognise the outstanding efforts academic staff make to ensure NUI Galway students receive the highest quality learning experience. Competiton for the final awards (2004-2005) was keen and the quality of the materials submitted impressed all those on the Awards Panel. Candidates ranged from relatively new staff at the start of their academic careers to more senior colleagues.
After careful deliberation, four faculty members were selected and were presented with the first NUI Galway President's Awards for Teaching Excellence - Professor Jim Houghton and Dr. Jerome Sheahan from the Science Faculty; and Keith Warnock and Doris Devilly, both from the Commerce Faculty.
The Awards Panel consisted of senior staff in the University including the President, the Registrar, Deans, the Head of Quality, the Director of CELT, the President of the Students' Union and an external colleague, Prof. Bob Matthew (Head of the Teaching & Learning Service of the University of Glasgow).
