NUI GalwayThis is a topic which has received much media attention in recent years and is of great importance as we move towards a teaching environment in which students are more often expected to submit written pieces of coursework, work on projects and in teams. In most cases, plagiarism can arise due to poor academic practice based on a misunderstanding or lack of awareness of appropriate methods of referencing, paraphrasing and reviewing. To address this issue consistently, then, we should advocate a combination of education and standardised procedure.
Each School has nominated a number of Advisors to handle suspected cases and CELT is developing training courses and support tools to support their work. We have also ensured that most academic staff are well informed about the issue by distributing information leaflets and handbooks.
Resources to support academic honesty, including a list of School Advisors and links to external resources, are available under the NUI Galway Teaching and Learning Forum on Blackboard.
The current code of practice was adopted by Academic Council in 2003 and is being reviewed based on the experience of implementing such procedures. Staff and departments are urged to follow these guidelines in association with any College specific regulations.

In September 2006, the university acquired a site licence for the use of the plagiarism detection software Turnitin. This service allows you to compare submitted documents with hundreds of thousands in their database, as well as internet sites (billions of pages). Turnitin now supports pdf files, as well as the usual Microsoft formats. Turnitin has also been integrated with Blackboard, allowing easier access and submission by students. To gain access and to find out more about using the service, email turnitin

CELT now offers short, focussed workshop sessions to small groups of staff, on request. These sessions focus on using Turnitin and interpreting the similarity reports, as well as particular needs of the group.
