The Independent Student Feedback Scheme

This scheme is available to all permanent members of academic staff  and is a simple process which surveys students in a number of the modules which you teach using a standard feedback form which focuses on your approach to teaching and learning.

The feedback form is based on that which is used for the President’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and the data is gathered for you, collated and summarised. It has also been proposed that this scheme may be incorporated into the academic promotions process (Senior Lecturer) but this is still subject to discussion and agreement amongst the appropriate parties. 

Note that it does not replace existing good practice of gathering a variety of forms of feedback from students (such as the Grouped Student, End of Module/Mid-semester questionnaires, or Peer Evaluation methods) for inclusion in individual Teaching Portfolios, but rather should be seen as complementing these.

 The process is as follows.

1. Academic staff member registers for the scheme using the online form 
2. On this form, the staff member lists all the modules which they are teaching in the current academic year, with an indication of the typical class size in each case.
3. Three modules are selected from this listing which span class size, level, type if possible. This is done by an administrator working in association with CELT for this process.
4. The standard questionnaire (online) is emailed to students in each of the selected modules at an appropriate stage in the Semester.
5. The administrator collates the data thus obtained into a single summary document. This document will also indicate the proportion of students on each module actually completing the form.
6. If the staff member intends to apply for promotion under the SL scheme, then the summary document will be provided to the Senior Lectureship Promotions Board directly. This will be done in hardcopy only to ensure confidentiality.
7. The summary document will also be provided to the staff member, again in hardcopy form only.
8. The process is confidential and the data thus gathered will not be used for any other purposes other than described here, nor will it be shared with any other party. The administrator managing the data will do so in an independent and confidential manner and ensure that the data is secure.

The questionnaire, which has been used for a number of years with students on a wide variety of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is provided online and students are asked to identify themselves before the questions are presented to them. This identity information is not tracked in the process but is simply to ensure that the student is undertaking the module in question.
