Previously, Catherine was a lecturer in Information Technology and academic coordinator of online IT programmes at NUI Galway from 2000 to 2014. Catherine holds a Ph.D. in open education from NUI Galway, an M.A. in Women's Studies (Gender and Technology) from the University of Limerick (Ireland), an M.Eng. in Systems Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology (USA), and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA).
