Biography

Catherine Cronin is a  Curriculum and Educational Developer in the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). She recently completed her PhD in the area of open educational practices (OEP) in higher education. Catherine's research interests include open education, networked learning, digital identity, and links between formal and informal learning.

Previously, Catherine was a lecturer in Information Technology and academic coordinator of online IT programmes at NUI Galway from 2000 to 2014. Catherine holds a Ph.D. in open education from NUI Galway, an M.A. in Women's Studies (Gender and Technology) from the University of Limerick (Ireland), an M.Eng. in Systems Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology (USA), and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA).

2005-2014 Professional Skills CT231 Research and communication in IT: search and research strategies, evaluating sources, writing, presenting, online publishing, curation, teamwork. To complement this focus on the practices of research and communication, students also explore a range of digital and social media topics including digital identity, privacy, social media, openness and Personal Learning Networks (PLNs).
