Research Papers
In November 2002, the Centre for Irish Studies published
Hidden Ireland, Public Sphere, a research paper by Joep Leerssen, Professor of Modern European Literature at the University of Amsterdam, which investigates the cultural transfer that took place from native Irish-speaking Ireland to urban academic and professional circles between 1780 and 1830 and how the Catholic population came to appropriate the public sphere between 1820 and 1850.
Professor Leerssen’s provocative study is the first in a series of research papers which have been commissioned from a number of the most eminent international scholars working in the area of Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. The series will be further developed to accommodate some of the most innovative research in Irish Studies in the coming years and to provide, by its excellence and diversity, a model for the future development of the discipline.
In 2004/2005, the Centre will publish two contributions to the series by Luke Gibbons and Breandán Ó Buachalla.
