Project Summary This study focuses upon the ‘Greater Tomorrow’ crèche and Ballyhaunis Community Preschool, services which are accessed primarily by members of the asylum seeking community at Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo. Utilising a qualitative approach, the study captures opinions of service users (i.e. parents), key informants and staff members in both services, illustrating the impacts of the services on the educational, social and cognitive outcomes for children, and informal supports for families. Drawing on social theoretical approaches to Family Support (cf. Devaney et al. 2013), the project highlights that the services provide invaluable emotional and material supports for parents too, many of whom report that they remain ‘stuck’ in asylum for extended time periods. While the project focuses on matters like quality of service provision in both the crèche and preschool, applying quality indicators from the literature, the project tells the story of people living in asylum in Co Mayo, and the challenges and struggles they face in everyday life.
