The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

 

The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights [UNCESCR] is the treaty body mandated to monitor States Parties’ compliance with the ICESCR. The 18 CESCR members are independent experts that meet twice a year holding two three-week sessions in Geneva. The Committee is also responsible for monitoring of the implementation of the provisions of the ICESR. For more information about the work of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, click here.

 

General Comments 

 Additionally, the Committee publishes its interpretation of the provisions of the Covenant, know as general comments.

The specific elements of the right to housing have been further developed in two main general comments adopted by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 1991 and 1997. Click here for more information on these and  other relevent Comments.

 

Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

 Considering the importance for every human being of having a secure place to live, the UN Commission of Human Rights decided to appoint a Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living in 2000. See here for more information.
