GY114: BA with irish studies
First Year Hand Book
It is a great pleasure to introduce you to the BA with Irish Studies, one of eight BA Connect degrees now offered at NUI Galway. Over the past three years, this unique degree has gone from strength to strength and attracts students from all over Ireland.
The BA with Irish Studies at NUI Galway was specifically instituted to promote academic excellence in conjunction with developing professional skills. This denominated arts degree programme is limited to fifteen students only, who will graduate with a BA in their two chosen subjects, and an additional specialism in Irish Studies. For example, students who take English and History as their preferred options will graduate with a BA in English and History with an additional specialism in Irish Studies, while students who take Irish and Celtic Civilization will graduate with a BA in those subjects in addition to their Irish Studies specialism.
The BA
with Irish Studies is an expanded four year programme that explores the dramatic changes in Irish identities that have taken place from the Great Hunger of the 1840s through to the twenty first century. The three specific areas of focused study at undergraduate level are Literature in English, Literature in Irish (studied in translation), and Irish Music and Dance Studies. Key advantages of the programme include
small group teaching
semester abroad at an international university
advanced writing and oral presentation skills
continuous assessment rather than end of semester examinations
It is evident from students currently enrolled that the BA with Irish Studies is particularly attractive to those with a strong interest in modern and contemporary Irish culture whose preferred subjects at Leaving Certificate level included History, English, Irish, and Music.
