Sustainable development is the key aspiration for the 21st century. The Environment, Development and Sustainability cluster (CEDS) promotes interdisciplinary research to address pressing challenges facing humanity today, especially the increasing complexity and uncertainty surrounding development and sustainability efforts. Its research remit incorporates issues of governance, policy, democracy, citizenship and political participation. The study of socio-economic and cultural levers for sustainable develop¬ment forms another focus of CEDS.
The Environment, Development and Sustainability cluster (CEDS) offers an environment conducive to research collaboration, critical reflection and interdisciplinary inquiry.
The conceptual orientations of CEDS centre on the meanings and measurement of social, economic, political, spatial and cultural dimensions of sustainability. Questions of (in)equality and (in)justice are central to the sustainability agenda and their social scientific investigation is central to CEDS research efforts. Political scientists, sociologists, economists, geographers and sociolinguists involved in this group are engaged in interdisciplinary and collabora¬tive research that connects theoretical and empirical concerns through problem- and evidence-based approaches.
CEDS members deploy a plethora of qualitative, quantitative and inter- and trans-disciplinary research methodologies, including interviews and focus groups, ethnographic fieldwork, survey research and secondary analysis of publicly available data sets. The visualisation of data through diagrams, illustrations and maps constitutes a main strength of CEDS.
Researchers within this group are currently contri¬buting to national and international research projects and networks and have extensive experience in research planning and management and fourth level supervision.
CEDS members are engaged in research and teaching in four key thematic areas:
Theme I - Sustainability, knowledge and everyday practices
Theme II - Sustainable rural systems
Theme III - Marine and coastal environments
Theme IV - Governance, development and contestation
