Gender and Public Policy Cluster 

Gender and Public Policy is a multi-disciplinary research cluster with members drawn from the disciplines of Business, Economics, Sociology, Politics, Education, and Law.

The central focus of the cluster is on the critical appraisal of public policy from a gender perspective. The cluster aims to develop richer understandings of policy effects and outcomes and to identify gaps and challenges in existing policy frameworks. It also strives to advance gender-sensitive policy alternatives and to engage for this purpose with policy-makers and stakeholders.

Key areas of consideration in the cluster include

• Understanding gender dimensions of the emerging economic landscape and demographic change, in particular the embedded gender relations within the labour market, and the in the intersection between paid and unpaid work, knowledge, ’ideas’ and innovation
• Assessing gendered inequalities in education, intersections with other dimensions, such as social class and ethnicity, and the implications for the development of dynamic, knowledge-based societies in different locations and contexts.
• Establishing the intersection of law, gender, equality and public policy with a focus on substantive equality for both genders and ensuring that legal norms reflect and implement equality concerns

The current work of the cluster is wide ranging, and includes research on pensions and gender in Ireland; gender impacts of the recession; the shifting dynamics of gender, labour and the welfare state; gender aspects of family property and marital breakdown law; and gender in higher education, especially in relation to academic careers.

The cluster is particularly concerned with civic engagement, including contributions to policymaking at national and international levels; extensive engagement with NGOs and third sector organisations; and encouraging women’s participation in the public process.

Members of the Gender and Public Policy Cluster are also members of Gender ARC, a consortium of gender-focused researchers at NUI Galway and the University of Limerick.
