Konstanze Höchtberger joined CISC as a recipient of PhD Studentship in the Internationally Traded Services group at the NUI Galway in March 2003. She received a Diploma in Economic Geography from the Institute of Economic Geography, Munich School of Management at Ludwig- Maximilians-University of Munich. Konstanze Höchtberger’s diploma thesis involved spending four months in a foreign R&D centre of a transnational corporation in Bangalore, India. Her dissertation research focused on the business and social networks developed between the R&D centre and its Indian outsourcing partners. In 2005, Konstanze participated in the University of California’s Education Abroad Program and successfully completed the winter term at the graduate school of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Konstanze Höchtberger’s PhD dissertation deals with the growth and the upgrading of the ICT and ICT-enabled services sector in Ireland. Her theoretical and empirical approach towards analysing services-led regional development in Ireland accounts for processes geared to the local level and organizational relationships operating within global value chains. Konstanze’s PhD research investigates the evolution of Irish-based affiliates of transnational corporations (TNCs) by examining the extent of repeat investments and the nature of added business functions. Her PhD project explores the local and global-level factors influencing this upgrading process and the rationale for ICT TNCs to centralise software development, financial services and other business process offshored (BPO) activities for the European market in Ireland. Moreover, Konstanze’s PhD project is concerned with the development of the indigenous software sector, which comprises a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specialised on custom and niche software product development for export markets. Her research investigates Irish software firms’ critical inter-organisational and inter-personal relationships, both in Ireland and in their international markets, which influence the processes of indigenous firm formation, overseas expansion and upgrading.
