Lorna Ryan was awarded a PhD (Sociology, University of Kent at
Canterbury, UK) in 1996. This research was subsequently published in
book form. She has carried out research and evaluations in the UK,
Australia and Ireland and has worked on and published in diverse
research fields including the social aspects of HIV/AIDS, social
exclusion and labour market participation, equality (gender, ethnicity)
and research ethics. She has sat on various national committees and has
coordinated trans-national activities as part of European Commission
ESF programmes.
Most recently she held the post of Manager of a DIT Industry
Development Centre. Prior to this, she worked at the European
Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions. She is
an External Examiner for a BA Programme in the School of Health and
Social Sciences at DeMontfort University, Leicester, UK and teaches a
module on social research methods as part of the Diploma in Addiction
Studies, TCD. Current research interests include tacit knowledge and
innovation processes; gender and STI; ethics and technology and she is
currently engaged in research projects commissioned by the Department
of Education and Science and by the NDP Gender Equality Unit,
Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform relating to gender
equality.
