Civil Engineering
College of Engineering and Informatics Postgraduate Research
Overview
Research activity spans a broad spectrum of civil engineering subjects, which include (but are not limited to)
concrete, steel and
timber structures, wind engineering,
environmental engineering,
highway engineering,
geotechnics,
earthquake engineering,
building energy management,
offshore and coastal engineering, construction management, advanced materials and
computational mechanics.
This topical and strategic research is funded by industrial partners and several national and international funding agencies, including the European Union (EU). Some of the research is interdisciplinary and is aligned with the university's major research themes; for example, some academic staff work within research institutes such as the Environmental Change Institute, and the Ryan Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy Research.
Details
Students conduct research for the M.Eng.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees under the supervision of a member of academic staff of the Discipline of Civil Engineering. It is also possible for joint supervision with a member of academic staff of another discipline, especially for multi-disciplinary projects. The precise work involved depends on the subject area, but always involves cutting-edge academic study and some form of experimental design and/or analysis.
Schedule
M.Eng.Sc. by Research: the degree normally extends over 2 academic years.
Ph.D. by Research: the degree normally takes 3 academic years to complete. Students are expected to present for a formal assessment at the end of their first year.

Application Procedure
Applications for M.Eng.Sc. and Ph.D. by research can be made at any time, but registration follows the normal academic year cycle. Most of the department’s research candidates are supported by fellowship schemes or externally funded research programmes. Prior to submitting your application please discuss, via email, your area of interest with the relevant lecturer selected from the
staff page. Details of current research projects being undertaken in the department are given in the
research page.
All course applications are now made through the Postgraduate Applications Centre only. Click the PAC code for the course you are interested in at the top right of the page to proceed.

What our students say…
Mark McCaffrey
I graduated from the B.Eng (Civil) programme in 2009 and decided to undertake the Research M.Eng.Sc programme that September. My supervisors gave me the guidance and allowed me the flexibility to find the right research topic. During the course of my research I have been involved in industry collaboration, and topical research in the area of energy and carbon life cycle assessment. I have participated in and presented at academic workshops, conferences and seminars. I’ve utilised the excellent resources available in NUI Galway for career progression, while also enjoying the many extracurricular activities provided by the many societies and clubs
