Course Overview
The BSc in Project and Construction Management is an interdisciplinary degree programme, providing students with an extensive training in both construction management and project management. This degree programme prepares graduates to assume technical, management, academic and research and development level positions in the construction industry. Project managers are not just required in the vast ever-changing construction world, but also in many other industries from technology to pharmaceutical to IT to biomedical to agri-business and so on.
Students will undertake a five-month (April - August) work placement after their third year of study, either off- or on-campus. This Professional Experience Programme gives students an opportunity to work on projects relevant to their course of study and significantly improves their chances of obtaining employment after graduation. Prior to this, students get involved in many real world engineering projects both on and off campus. For example, there are a number of design projects in first year where students work together with engineering students in groups to design, build and test solutions to engineering problems (for example novel scale bridges and model cars). In second year of the degree programme students complete a building project in the community. Students identify a ‘real’ need of the community and aim to fulfill that need through their mini group project.

Career Opportunities
The construction industry has seen many rapid changes with the advent of new technologies and the extensive use of computer based techniques. Added to this are the exciting developments in both new materials with enhanced performance and new construction techniques. There is also the interdisciplinary challenge with a blurring of boundaries between traditional roles. This has resulted in the demand for highly trained graduates with the capacity to apply problem solving skills across a growing and diverse number of construction specialism’s. In addition, the project management skills gained from the programme will be marketable across a wide range of industries. Graduates have many career options:
Further Education
Students can go on to earn PhD and MEngSc degrees, through
research work, with an optional minor taught element in the case of the MEngSc. Students can specialise in one of the department's various areas of research, working with a high degree of independence, and becoming experts on their chosen topic. This work is usually published in international conferences and journals.

What our
graduates say…
Allan Hannon
BSc (ProjectBSc (Project & Construction Management) 2011 Graduate Engineer at RPS ""I chose to"I chose to study Project and Construction Management at NUI Galway because of the excellent reputation of the University and of the Engineering Department. NUI Galway also appealed to me because it offered a good balance between college life and social life. NUI Galway is also the only University offering this type of course. Studying Project and Construction Management at NUI Galway has been the foundation to succeeding as a graduate in the Construction Industry. Completing this degree prepared me with the technical and managerial knowledge and skills to successfully secure employment in the Construction industry. The BSc Project & Construction is such an interdisciplinary programme that I was at a distinct advantage having a firm understanding of a broad range of topics. The course also taught me to be adaptable; with each day being so different and with new issues arising all the time, it is important to develop this skill. It is my ambition to further my education and to eventually project manage Capital Works Projects such as the construction of large scale Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants."
