Research Interests

Education and scholarship in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, especially language teaching (Classical Latin and Greek); early linguistic thought; glosses, glossaries, commentaries and scholia.

Specific topics:
❧ Ancient education, especially grammar and rhetoric.
❧ Transmission of learning in glosses and glossaries (Latin, Greek, Old Irish).
❧ Knowledge of Greek and Hebrew in the early medieval West (esp. Ireland and Irish circles on the Continent).
❧ Digital humanities (esp. digital editions of glosses and glossaries).
❧ Comparative history of European and East Asian literary traditions.

I am happy to advise potential PhD students on funding and other practicalities.

Currently supervising three PhD projects:
1) The reception of pre-Socratic philosophy in Late Antiquity (Charles Doyle)
2) Digital representations of intertextuality in Late Antique epic (Ioannis Doukas, co-supervised with Michael Clarke)
3) The ideology of Sedulius Scotus' De Rectoribus Christianis (Noémi Farkas).
