Biography

I graduated with a BA in Classics (major) and Philosophy (minor) from University College, Cork in 1995. Afterwards I had a career in publishing and web development in London, Dublin and Galway.

Towards the end of my undergraduate studies I became fascinated with Late Antiquity and the Classical inheritance in the post-Roman world, including Ireland. I eventually returned to this interest and completed a PhD at NUI Galway in 2007 on the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew in early medieval Ireland (supervised by Dáibhí Ó Cróinín).

I then moved to Cambridge as a Research Associate (2007–9) on the Early Irish Glossaries Project, working towards producing editions of texts which I had studied for my PhD.

I returned to Galway in 2009 as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, studying the reception of the Late Antique Latin grammarian Priscian.

In 2012 I was appointed as Lecturer in Classics at NUI Galway. I am an Associate Director of NUI Galway's Moore Institute and have been head of Classics since 2018.

Research Interests

I work broadly on education and scholarship in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, especially:

- Ancient and early medieval grammatical and rhetorical traditions
- Glosses, glossaries, commentaries and scholia
- Knowledge of Greek and Hebrew in the early medieval West
- Transmission and reception of Classical texts
- Digital editions and digital-editing methodologies
- Hiberno-Latin

I am happy to advise prospective PhD students who are interested in any of these areas about research design and funding opportunities.

I am currently supervising PhD projects on the reception of pre-Socratic philosophy in Late Antiquity, on digital representations of intertextuality in Late Antique epic, and on political ideology in Sedulius Scotus' De Rectoribus Christianis. I have supervised MA theses on the Hiberno-Latin exegetical text De Mirabilibus Sacrae Scripturae, on Paul's Letter to the Galatians, and on Roman foundation myths.
