M.LITT AND PH.D. BY RESEARCH
We welcome applications for study towards research degrees from candidates with suitable qualifications and specialist interests related to those of our staff team. For the Master of Letters (M. Litt.) degree two years of full-time study are normal; a Ph.D. is typically completed in three to four years of full-time study. While conducting research you will typically take language and other courses designed to enhance your skill base. Further support, both academic and financial, is available from other bodies in the University such as the Moore Institute, the Texts Contexts and Cultures initiative, and the College-wide scholarship schemes such as the Lady Gregory Fellowships scheme. Among the team there are special clusters of interest in:
- ethnicity and identity
- field archaeology, esp. in south Italy
- culture and learning in early medieval Ireland
- the recreation of the Classical inheritance in medieval and modern literature
- Indo-European studies
- bilingualism and cultural fusion
- language change - IIndo-European studies, historical semantics
- palaeography and the culture of the book
- heroic literature and ideology
- comparative and structural analysis of myth
- medieval Latin
If you are interested in applying for a research degree you should begin by identifying and approaching a prospective supervisor with whom you can informally discuss your plans.
