We will offer a general introduction to the modules in Second-Year Classics on the first Monday of the teaching semester. (This year:
10 a.m. Monday, 3 September, in AC214 on the Concourse.) If you are considering studying Classics, this will be an excellent opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the course.
As far as the registration system is concerned, all Classics modules are optional—but we strongly recommend certain combinations. Each semester has a designated core module that all Classics students should take. In addition, you can choose two further modules each semester according to your interests.
Usually, you will take either two Latin modules per semester or two modules in visual and intellectual culture. If you do not take Latin, your studies in art, archaeology and the Classical tradition will culminate in the special challenge of CC227, the module known as The Oral: Research and Presentation Skills.
(It is possible to take one Latin module per semester, but this is not advisable for all but the most dedicated students. In this case students would take the modules CC230 and CC232 (Beginning Latin) and be encouraged to attend as many classes as possible from CCS202 and CCS203 (Latin and Historical Linguistics) on an unofficial basis.)
Further options are available for you to substitute for any of the standard choices except the core modules. Ancient Greek is normally taken as part of the third-year programme, but some second-year students may be interested in starting this fascinating but challenging language. There is one Greek module per semester, which meets three times weekly. In addition, Classics students may take selected modules offered by Philosophy and Celtic Civilisation.
