Henry Hutchinson Stewart Scholarship - 3 in a Row for Nursing!

Congratulations to Leanna O'Flynn,who won first prize in the prestigious Henry Hutchinson Stewart Medical Scholarships http://www.nui.ie/awards/undergraduates.asp Leanna’s achievement builds on the extraordinary results of previous years with students from the School of Nursing & Midwifery winning first prize each year for the past 3 years. Leanna who comes from Galway was both delighted and surprised at her win.  “ I was surprised and quite shocked upon hearing the news and could not believe that I had won this coveted award. It’s is still only sinking in but it feels so wonderful to get such recognition at the end of four hard working years.” Leanna is eager to begin work as a Registered General Nurse and eventually hopes to travel and work in America.  In time she would like to return to the National Univerity or Ireland, Galway to pursue a a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Oncology).

This competition is run annually across the NUI Universities and the award is based on student’s results from the final degree examinations in Nursing. Previous First Prize Winners Include:

Adjunct Professors appointed to the School of Nursing & Midwifery

Professor Alan Walker (BA, DLitt, Hon. D.Soc.Sc. (HKBU), FRSA, AcSS) Professor of Social Policy and Social Gerontology, Director of the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme,  University of Sheffield, has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor to the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Alan is an academic with a long history of research on ageing and older people. He is a specialist in social gerontology and is Chair of the European Foundation on Social Quality, which is based in Amsterdam.  He has published more than 20 books, over 200 reports and more than 300 papers in scholarly journals and edited volumes and his work has been published in more than 20 languages. He will work with the School to increase research income, publications and research outputs on projects related to aging and older people. His duties will focus exclusively on research support

Adjunct Professors appointed to the School of Nursing & Midwifery

Professor Richard Gray, (RN, BSc Hon. MSc Public Health, PhD) Professor in Research Related to Nursing & Deputy Associate Dean for Research at the University of East Anglia has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor to the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Richard is an academic with a long history of research on chronic disease and mental health. He has an international reputation for his multidisciplinary clinical and academic work and has published over 100 peer review papers and book chapters. He is also an acknowledged expert in conducting randomised control trials (RCT). 2nd International Nursing and Midwifery Conference

The 2nd International Nursing and Midwifery Conference hosted by The School of Nursing and Midwifery took place in Áras Moyola, National University of Ireland, Galway on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th April 2009.

The conference provided an opportunity for researchers, practitioners and policy makers to get together to learn, debate and share methods of building and promoting excellence in practice.  Over 160 international delegates attended the conference from as far afield as Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, USA and different parts of europe including Finland and Swedan.

PhD student wins Research Prize

Congratulations to Catherine Houghton a PhD Student in the School of Nursing & Midwifery who won the best research methodology prize at the 28th Annual International Nursing & Midwifery Research Conference held in the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI).

The title of Catherine’s presentation was ’Clarifying Case Study Research: Example from Practice’. Catherine was awarded the prize for ’pushing the boundaries in Nursing &Midwifery Research Methodology.

Report Finds Multi-disciplinary Education in Child Protection Issues Lacking Among Students

A research project conducted by NUI Galway, in conjunction with the HSE West, has revealed that many postgraduate students who will go on to be involved in child protection have very little knowledge of the processes to be adhered to when reporting and following up on child protection concerns.  Read On ...

Suzanne Campbell & Terry Quell, Fairfield University

Suzanne Campbell and Terry Quell,  Fairfield University, Connecticut will be visiting the School of Nursing and Midwifery from Tuesday 24th February to Friday 27th February.  During their visit they will meet with staff and liaise with students from Fairfield University who are currently undertaking a study abroad semester at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, NUI Galway.

Michelle A. Beauchesne, DNSc, CPNP, FNAP, FAANP

Fulbright scholar, Dr. Michelle Beauchesne, Associate Professor & Coordinator, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialization, Bouve College of Health Science, Northeastern University, Boston was recently on a two week visit to the School of Nursing and Midwifery, NUI Galway. Dr. Beauchesne has extensive expertise in educating advanced practice nurses and in conducting research on advanced nursing and midwifery practice internationally.  Dr. Beauchesne gave a lunch time seminar on  “The outcomes of advanced practice” Click here for presentation.
