Current Research

COBRA endeavors to engage in bioethical scholarship of a high calibre and welcomes multi- and cross-disciplinary enquiry.

One of COBRA's main objectives is to contribute to the development of high quality research and scholarship in the area of ethics and bioethics. We are actively involved in research on many topics, such as disability, civic engagement, human subject research, professional ethics, research ethics and embryonic stem cell research.

COBRA has received funding for a number of ongoing bioethical research projects and endeavours to forge research collaborative links with colleagues within NUI Galway and colleagues elsewhere.

Some of COBRA's many research projects include:

Ethics committees and ethics review of children’s research in Ireland, commissioned by the Office of the Minister for Children
Ethical issues in stem cell research, with a particular focus on the Irish context, in cooperation with the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI)
Academic ethics and civic responsibility in higher education, with particular focus on the service learning pedagogy, in cooperation with the Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at NUI Galway
Disability: ethical issues and public policy
Health Care Ethics and Clinical Ethics

Postgraduate Research Opportunities

Research interests of the members of the Centre are diverse and varied. We welcome new postgraduate students in a similarly wide range of research areas. Currently, the Centre's academic members supervise theses on bioethical topics for students in the MA, MLitt and PhD programmes in the Department of Philosophy. Below is a brief overview of the programmes offered, for more information on these programmes, please go to the Department's postgraduate programmes page. Master of Arts (MA) in Ethics Culture and Global Change

The MA Degree (Master of Arts) in Ethics, Culture and Global Change is a unique masters programme offered by the Department of Philosophy in NUI Galway, which explores new ways of applying theoretical concepts to the practical problems in a global society. This programme is comprised of modules, seminars, service learning and a research dissertation.

Master of Letters (MLitt.)

The MLitt. Degree (Master of Letters) is a "thesis only" programme: it can be acquired by writing a major thesis under the supervision of a member of the Department of Philosophy.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD is a research degree assessed on the basis of a thesis, with assessment by an internal examiner and an external examiner. Any topic in philosophy will be considered; it is advisable to discuss this with the Directors of the Centre and seek supervision prior to making an application. Applicants should have obtained the degree of MA or an equivalent.

Four-Year Structured PhD in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (PhD)

Students now have the option of participating in a four year structured PhD program, available through the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Similar to the research degree, students will have to complete a thesis within their chosen research area, while also participating in certain taught modules and other academic activities. Structured PhD in Philosophy of Art and Culture (PhD)

This is an interdisciplinary, cross institutional PhD programme between NUI, Galway and Mary Immaculate College in the University of Limerick. This full time programme will provide students with a PhD following four years of thesis-orientated research and taught modules. Students will be registered at one of the host institutions but will attend classes provided by both. More information on this PhD is available here.
