iPads in Initial Teacher Education: A Study of the Impact on Pedagogy and Practice

The Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas is the first Initial Teacher Education course in Europe to roll out a 1:1 iPad requirement for all its students.  Teacher educators on the programme are conducting a multi-dimensional research project on this development. In the short term, the key research questions are as follows:

  • What impact has the use of iPads on the professional practice of teacher educators on the Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas (administrative, teaching, contact with students, feedback, TP supervision)?
  • How do iPads support student-teachers’ professional learning on the DGO programme?
  • What is the impact of iPads on student-teachers’ teaching in the classroom?

Gaelcholáistí are at the forefront of iPad adoption in schools and, over time, this project will monitor the roll out and long-term impact of this technology in the schools, and the impact it has on student learning.

Focus groups, questionnaires, sound files, and video recordings will be used in the research, the methodology being grounded in TPACK framework (Mishra and Koehler, 2006).
