The Immersive Classroom:  (2016-2020, €400K).  G2020 Funding.  Galway 2020 Bid for European Capital of Culture. Sub-category: ‘Windows of the World’ aka ‘Virtual Capital of Culture’, based around the use of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Holography and 3D projection mapping.  Funded by: The Commission of the European Union, Galway 2020To develop a bespoke digital Augmented Reality programme to target increased digital literacy in primary schools in Ireland, through the creation of cultural artifacts.

Concept STEM:  (2017, €15K).  Enterprise Ireland Feasibility Study Funding.  The development of an agile learning system that supports conceptual learning.

M²EID – Mathematical Meta-level developments in English and Irish language Discourses: (2016-2017, €95,500).  Investigating whether differences in languages, and their use, by bilingual mathematical learners have a differential impact upon cognitive (meta-level) mathematical processing, while recognising the social aspects of learning.  Project Website: https://meidproject1617.wordpress.com  Irish Research Council New Horizons Research Grant.

Sea Change: (2015-2018, €40K) Horizon 2020 projectto bring about a fundamental ‘Sea Change’ in the way European citizens view their relationship with the sea by empowering them – as ‘Ocean Literate’ citizens - to take direct and sustainable action towards healthy seas and ocean, healthy communities and ultimately - a healthy planet.  This research included a Collective Intelligence methodological approach to collecting data with diverse stakeholders who play a role in advancing Ocean Literacy.  This project also involved the design of a marine iBook resource for teachers across Europe, in addition to the development of marine games in conjunction with Coderdojo.Total Budget: €3,494,876.

iPads in ITE: Impact on Pedagogy and Practice project: (BMM, SOG, SNG) (2014-ongoing) examining the impact of the requirement of an iPad for all MGO students on the professional practice of teacher educators, and on the professional learning and teaching of student teachers.  Key achievements have included the International Mobile Technology in Initial Teacher Education (MiTE) conference in 2015 and 2016, guest editing (TH, SÓG SNíG) of two Special Issues of the International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning 2016 (papers from the MiTE conference), and the Apple Distinguished Programme Award 2015 and 2016 (first programme in Europe).

Q (Quantum)-Tales: (2013-2016, €1,273,526.60/NUIG: €110,000) EU H2020Project to promote children’s literacy through the design and development of educational e-books; www.qtales.com.  The School of Education has contributed to the development of the Q-Tales European ecosystem for the design and publication of educational e-books for children, incorporating pedagogical mini-games, which can be added to and integrated within the digital books to promote interactivity and enhance literacy.

Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching/Dioplóma Gairmiúil sa Mhatamaitic don Mhúinteoireacht:  The national, blended and bilingual programme to upskill out-of-field mathematics teachers in Ireland.  Provided free to teachers, funded by the Department of Education and Skills and jointly accredited by NUI Galway and University of Limerick, to-date it has enabled a total of 706 out-of-field mathematics teachers to upskill and gain Teaching Council accreditation.  Programme design evaluation research is being conducted by the School of Education with colleagues at the University of Limerick. Funded by the EPI-STEM - €20,000 (2013 - 2016).

REX (Research Expertise Exchange):  (2015-2017, €196,156/NUIG: €20,041) National Forum Project to design and develop an online portal for teacher research in Ireland. http://www.researchexpertiseexchange.com/

Breaking the SEAL – Student Engagement with Archives through Learning: (2015, €3,900).  This project focuses on connecting second level students to the archival material, primary sources, and collections of the Hardiman Library at NUI Galway. Students engage with varying media of primary sources, from historic objects to digital sources and in particular their unique potential for experiential learning.  Key outcomes for students include the development of critical analysis skills, independent thinking and historical research skills. Consortium of National and University Libraries (CONUL) Teaching and Learning National Award Winner 2016.

Campus Create:  (2016, €900)  Encourages everyday creativity on the campus of NUIG the through a series of 12 creative challenges, which prompt participants to design, upload and share creative projects online in response to the creative prompts. 2016.

SUIM² – Spreagadh na hUimhearthachta tríd Imeachtaí Múinteoireachta Muiníneacha:  An analysis of mathematical discourse in Irish and use of language-as-resource in mathematics teaching by Irish-medium primary teachers.  Funded by COGG - €30,000 (April 2013 – March 2015).

MELBA: Mathématiques à l'école en langue bretonne aujourd'hui:  Collaborative research project on the development of the mathematics register in Breton, in conjunction with the University of Renne, France.  Funded by MSHB, France - €14,000 (January 2013 – Sept. 2014)

Kitchen Chemistry: (2012-2016, €2.6K) projected developed 6 short movie clips of experiments, from the Kitchen Chemistry collection, in addition to associated support materials, combining both pedagogical and technology design. Project Leaders: Veronica McCauley (School of Education, NUI Galway, Nicole Walshe (School of Chemistry, NUI Galway). Explore funding: €1,000. COGG funding (€1,000, 2012; €600, 2016).

Science Hooks: (2012-2013, €30K). This project developed a series of 5 digital resources (iBooks), for teaching and learning within Science at second-level.  The hook iBooks are hosted on a national teaching resource website (http://www.sciencehooks.scoilnet.ie).  Project Leaders: Veronica McCauley, Mary Fleming, Kevin Davison and Seán Ó Grádaigh.  Science Education Resource (SER) Design Project: Science Hooks.  In an effort to support the rapid influx of mobile technologies into the schools, each resource was developed into an iBook (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and available for free download on the iBookstore (http://tinyurl.com/SciHookBooks), eliciting over 3,000 downloads worldwide within the first five months.  The three resource sets were also translated into Irish, to support science teaching in Irish language schools.  Bright Ideas Initiative.  Funding €30,000.
