Western Ireland

Debates surrounding whether changes apparent in the archaeological record are related to population movements have been a feature of archaeological enquiries since the beginnings of the discipline. Next generation sequencing of ancient (aDNA) is now providing important new data relevant to these questions. Neolithic and Chalcolithic human remains from Roughan Hill have been included in a pioneering study of aDNA on prehistoric Irish human skeletal material and with the forthcoming results we hope to shed some light on prehistoric population dynamics in western Ireland.
