Caherconnell Archaeological Field School

From O’Davoren to Davoren, from Cahermacnaughten to Caherconnell and from Brehon Law School to Archaeological Field School, education is woven into the tapestry of Burren history and once again finds its home in a stone cashel (medieval settlement enclosure). The Caherconnell Archaeological Field School (CAFS) is an international archaeology field school fully accredited by the National University of Ireland, Galway. Courses are open to all – to those seeking academic credit and those not.
The unique Burren landscape of western Ireland has huge archaeological potential, on a local, regional, national, and international scale, due to its excellent preservation of upstanding remains and material culture. The Caherconnell Archaeological Project began in 2007 with an excavation within the large settlement enclosure (‘cashel’) of Caherconnell, in the townland of the same name in the central Burren, Co. Clare. The following year, a second excavation was undertaken, this time focused on a medieval structure outside the cashel. 2009 saw a third excavation, one that concentrated on a prehistoric settlement and ritual site. The School was established in 2010 to continue archaeological research in this landscape. It is a truly co-operative effort, involving the landowners, local community and academia.
Two-, four-, and six-week courses are available, catering for all levels of experience and interest. Our primary focus is excavation, however, we also offer other courses, in archaeological survey and artefact recording for example. We provide a comprehensive service to enhance your experience with us. Our fees include all tuition, full board on each course day, and breakfast and dinner on the weekend, transport to and from site, Monday – Friday, guided tours of the Burren and Medieval Galway, hostel accommodation in the village of Kilfenora, Co. Clare, administration, and on-site insurance.
Come, join us – experience this amazing archaeology and wonderful place for yourself!
