Biography

Dr Morrissey graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a first class degree in Natural Science, majoring in Geography, before beginning an ESRC-funded PhD in Geography at the University of Exeter. His doctoral research drew on postcolonial theory to explore the practices of imperialism and resistance in England's first geopolitical imaginary in the early modern period, Ireland. After completing his PhD, Dr Morrissey taught at Exeter for a year before going to NUI Galway where he lectures on political and cultural geography. In recent years, his research has explored the geopolitical dimensions of US national security interests in the Middle East, with particular reference to US Central Command (CENTCOM). The Long War, a critical history of CENTCOM documenting the ongoing imperial interventions of the command, comes out with University of Georgia Press in June 2017. Dr Morrissey has also begun a new Irish Research Council project entitled Haven, which examines the Western response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean.

Dr Morrissey received a Government of Ireland IRCHSS Fellowship in 2007/2008 for a research project entitled 'CENTCOM and US Geopolitical Grand Strategy in the Middle East, 1983-2003'. While pursuing this research, he was a Senior Research Scholar in Geopolitics at the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at City University of New York (CUNY Graduate Center). In 2010, he was nominated by the Fulbright Commission as Ireland's sole candidate for a Fulbright US Institute Scholar Award for 2010/2011, for the Institute on US Foreign Policy at the University of Florida.

In 2009, Dr Morrissey coordinated the establishment of the MA in Environment, Society & Development at NUI Galway, for which he is Programme Director. It has been a leading Masters programme in the university since, with consistently high numbers of students, in addition to high numbers of ICOS and international students from all over the world, including Canada, China, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Liberia, Malawi, Norway, Russia, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam. It has won a number of research and teaching accolades, including a CELT Learning and Teaching Innovation Award in 2011 to extend the international civic engagement element of the MA, which involves students working on the ground with the UNDP in Bosnia.

Dr Morrissey previously served as Head of Geography at NUI Galway, during which time he initiated a number of developments in research, teaching and community engagement. He won the President's Award for Teaching Excellence at NUI Galway in 2011, and in 2012 he won the NAIRTL National Academy Award for Research and Teaching Excellence. In 2012, he also completed a Masters in Academic Practice at NUI Galway. He spent 2013/2014 at the University of Cambridge, where he was elected the Derek Brewer Quatercentenary Research Fellow at Emmanuel College and Visiting Fellow at Fitzwilliam College. On his return to Galway in 2014, John was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Geography, and in 2015 he was appointed Associate Director of the Moore Institute for Humanities. John is serving as Head of School of Geography and Archaeology for 2017/2018.

Research Interests

Dr Morrissey is a political and cultural geographer with research interests in geopolitics, imperialism and international development. His current research is broadly concerned with the geopolitical scripting and political economy of contemporary US interventionism in the Middle East. He is the author of The Long War (University of Georgia Press), Negotiating Colonialism (RGS Historical Geography Research Series), co-author of Key Concepts in Historical Geography (Sage), and co-editor of Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis (Royal Irish Academy). A full list of his publications can be found here. At NUI Galway, Dr Morrissey is Associate Director of the Moore Institute for Humanities, Cluster Leader of the Geopolitics and Justice Research Group in Geography, and Programme Director of the MA in Environment, Society and Development.

Dr Morrissey's current research explores the political economy and biopolitics of US national security interests in the Middle East, with particular reference to US Central Command (CENTCOM). Research (e.g. Community based research) In 2010, Dr Morrissey established an annual symposium on 'Environment, Society and Development' at the UN Headquarters in Sarajevo, Bosnia, where students on the MA in Environment, Society and Development present their various field research projects to the UN, other development practitioners and community partners. Policy Development As a member of the Geographical Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy, Dr Morrissey has worked on various initiatives, including 'The Geography of Climate Justice' educational resource for schools, and the 2-day conference, 'Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis', which was attended by President of Ireland, Michael D. Outreach Dr Morrissey has had a number of letters published in the Irish Times respecting a variety of human geography concerns on the national and global scale, and has similarly contributed to RTE and BBC radio. I have made a number of contributions to Irish Aid as part of their consultative White Paper reviews. I have also attended and contributed to various Irish Aid academic consultation meetings in Dublin since the launch of the MA in Environment, Society and Development in 2009. I have sought to bring critical perspectives to bear on this national forum on a range of development policy contexts in practice. This has also fed back into the MA in Environment, Society and Development programme, with key individuals in Irish Aid regularly coming to Galway to offer guest lectures on the programme.
UNDP Bosnia
I have contributed to UNDP Bosnia development agenda reviews in 2012/2013, specifically in relation to the potential for a cross-cluster holistic approach to community development drawing upon the notion of 'environmental justice'.

Teaching Interests

Dr Morrissey is a political and cultural geographer, with particular research and teaching interests in geopolitics, imperialism and international security. His teaching also explores broader questions of representation, especially the geopolitical and cultural discursive power of abstract geographical knowledges. Dr Morrissey is a previous winner of the President's Award for Teaching Excellence at NUI Galway and the Irish National Academy Award for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning from NAIRTL.

3 key areas of research and teaching are:

Geopolitics 
Dr Morrissey's current research is focused on US geopolitics in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the evolving grand strategy of United States Central Command. He has also worked on a Clinton Institute-funded interdisciplinary project entitled 'War and American Identity' with David Ryan at UCC and Marilyn Young at NYU. In addition, his work in geopolitics speaks to broader issues of political economy and post-conflict development.

Securitization 
Dr Morrissey's work on securitization draws upon the theoretical writings of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler and others in critiquing the broad array of interventionary practices in our contemporary world that are underpinned by the mobilization of powerful neoliberal discourses of risk, regulation and security.

Representation 
Dr Morrissey's interest in representation is driven by a passion for interrogating the politics and power relations of dominant signifying practices in our modern world. He received seed funding from the NUIG/UL Strategic Alliance Initiative to develop a shared undergraduate module on landscape, space and place co-taught by colleagues in Geography and Archaeology at NUIG and Architecture at UL.
