SCHOOL OF HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

MISSION STATEMENT

History and Philosophy are essential subjects for our understanding today’s world. Through History we acquire a knowledge of the past, which informs our understanding of the present, while through Philosophy we develop our ability to think critically, and therefore to make better decisions about our future. The School of History and Philosophy is dedicated to preparing students to become citizens of the future who are able to face the challenges and opportunities of today’s complex world. We aim to provide students with the necessary skills to respond to a global reality in constant flux by teaching them values firmly rooted in the understanding of the lessons to be drawn from past societies and cultures in History, and from the critical study of the greatest products of human thought in Philosophy.

Undergraduates

The School of History and Philosophy has an enrollment of almost 1,000 undergraduate students. Both History and Philosophy can be studied as part of the BA (Joint Honours). In addition, History can be studied as a major with one or two other subjects in our new four-year BA History degree, which also includes work placement, study abroad and research project options in third year. Also, undergraduate students in Philosophy have the opportunity of becoming involved in the Philosophical Dialogue Project through the Philosophy for Children (P4C) pedagogy by sharing their philosophical curiosity with children in local schools. Details on all the School's Programmes and opportunities for Undergraduates are available on the History and Philosophy Departments' websites.
