Staff interests include Italian Critical Theory and Cultural Studies, Comparative Literary Studies, Romanticism, 19th Century Italian Literature and Civilization, 20th Century Italian Literature and Civilization, Travel Literature, Modern Italian Theatre, Italian History, Italian Children's Literature, Italian Women Writers, Modern and Contemporary Italian Poetry, Poetry in Translation, Translation Studies, Language Teaching Methodology and Applied Linguistics.

In 2018, Modern Languages at the University of Galway was ranked in the first 250 in the world by QS World University Ranking, and in an Internal Research Review Italian has been ranked the highest research area in the School of Languages, Literature and Cultures with 38% of publications considered of “World Class”, and 38% of “International Excellence”. Galway, European Capital of Culture for 2020, is a thriving city, renowned world wide for its vibrant and dynamic cultural scene. Italian Studies plays a major role in the development of research at University of Galway, and the postgraduate experience in Italian Studies is both fulfilling and rewarding.
