Course Description

First Year

The Beginners' course covers the basic elements of Spanish grammar and vocabulary. The Intermediate course offers practice and consolidation in the spoken and written skills already acquired.

Second Year

Regular exercises in written Spanish and weekly spoken language sessions develop an active command of the language with an emphasis on the business world. The course is an introduction to business matters in Spanish such as marketing, banking, human resources, company structure and management. Courses are also offered on different aspects of social and economic life in Spain and Chile, and cases of successful Spanish and Chilean companies.

Year Abroad

In the Third Year students follow courses in Spanish and in the area of Business Studies at a university in Spain (as part of the Erasmus exchange programme) or Chile. Their studies are supervised by their Coordinator in Spanish at NUI Galway and by their Coordinator in Spain. Students find the year abroad stimulating and enjoyable; working side by side with Spanish-speaking students they benefit greatly, both intellectually and personally, from the experience. Students may be attached to one of the following universities: Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), Deusto (Bilbao), Granada, León, Salamanca, Valencia and Valladolid and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile).

Final Year

Studies in Spanish promote the written and spoken abilities developed during the year abroad while dealing with a range of topics relevant to the business world and current affairs in Spain and Latin America.

Graduates of B. Comm. International with Spanish can follow careers in a variety of areas such as marketing, banking, accounting, sales and related fields. The added bonus of the language can facilitate employment in Spanish multinationals in Ireland such as the insurance company Mapfre or the communications company O2 Telefónica, and of course in international Irish companies that deal with Spanish and Latin American customers. Spanish also opens up employment possibilities in Spain, Latin America and even the USA. For example, one of our graduates found employment with the Irish company Fyffes in Miami.

Student testimonial

Not only is being able to speak a foreign language a huge advantage in the professional world, it’s also a lot of fun! The Applied Spanish classes at NUIG were very interactive and highly focused towards the language you’ll need in real business situations. The highlight of the 4 year programme, as most language students will tell you, was the Erasmus year abroad. Getting to study in a foreign country and meet new people from all over the world was truly an unforgettable experience and something that will definitely broaden your horizons. - Gwilym Rowan Williams, graduate of B. Comm. International (Spanish), 2008.
