Biography

Dr Jonathan Egan, Deputy Director of the DPsychSc in Clinical Psychology and Lecturer above the bar in Clinical Psychology completed both his BA in  psychology (1992) and MA in Applied Psychology (1993) and the M. Psych. Sc, (Clin. Spec., 1997), all at University College Dublin. He worked in both Child and Family and Adult Mental Health services and in 2000, Jonathan became the founding Director of Counselling for the Arches Adult Counselling Service for survivors of childhood abuse and neglect.  He completed his doctoral research dissertation on "Burnout in female counsellor/therapists of the National Counselling Service" (Hull, 2007).  In 2008, Jonathan became the Principal Clinical Specialist Psychologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, where he worked in Liaison Psychiatry and Cardiac Rehabilitation.  He has supervised over 20 trainee psychologists and served on the Committee of the Clinical Division of the Psychological Society of Ireland between 2005 and 2018. He made tenure in February 2015 as the Deputy Director of the Doctorate Programme in Clinical Psychology (DPsychSc). He now consults at the Pain Medicine Dept. at University College Hospital Galway. He has trained in explorative goal corrected psychotherapy under Dr Una McCluskey (York) and incorporates this approach in his work with patients attending a chronic pain management programme.  More recently, is completing a 3 year apprenticeship with Kristin Osborn (Harvard) in relation to training therapists in the short term dynamic therapy treatment- Affect Phobia Therapy in the CORE training in Stockholm.

Research Interests

Jonathan is interested in developing reflective scientist practitioners for the field of Clinical Psychology.

He also has an interest in PTSD in people who have experienced trauma during childhood, as well as the effect this has on the psychologists working with them.  He is currently interested in an adult's perception of their ability to express themselves emotionally as children to their parents or caregivers and how this may affect their relationship with food intake or emotional eating.

Jonathan also enjoys examining the therapeutic exchange between client and therapist, as well as whether a given approach is effective or not.  He trained with Dr Una McCluskey (York) in relation to attachment therapy with adolescents and adults and his practice is informed by her theory. He works clinically with groups of patients who attend chronic pain in an out-patent pain medicine clinic at UCHG.
