Details

The Certificate in Community Development Practice is a part-time programme, designed to enable community activists to gain a thorough understanding of community development combined with the practical skills necessary to work effectively in development work.

Intended applicants  

The Community Development Practice programmes are suitable for participants who are actively involved in community development work and who wish to obtain formal skills in this area.

Programme content   

Certificate in Community Development Practice carries 15 ECTS (credits). Students taking the Certificate programme must complete three modules as follows:

·         Community Development Theory and Practice

·         Social Analysis

·         Communication Leadership and Group Work Skills

Entry requirements

There are no special educational requirements for entry to the programme; however, students must be over 21 years of age and must have experience of working in a community or voluntary organisation.

Application procedure

Candidates submit an application form (see below) and students are selected on the basis of an informal interview. Numbers accepted on this programme is limited. The programme may not be available annually.

Duration and attendance requirements

The Certificate programme involves a minimum of 85 hours of instruction and assignments. Class sessions are normally held on one evening/morning each week throughout the academic year as well as special weekend seminars and workshops, which are arranged in consultation with the class members.

Assessment

Participants’ work is examined by means of continuous assessment. An assignment must be completed for each module. Following successful completion of the programme, students are awarded an NUI Certificate in Community Development Practice.
