Welcome to the Community Education Centre
Community Education Centre's History
The
NUI Galway Community Education Centre was re-established in 1996 by the Office of Adult and Continuing Education, NUI Galway, to provide back-up support and a range of resources and training for community development initiatives. To date the Centre has worked with a wide range of community groups and development organisations in Galway and the Western Region, including LEADER Companies, Local Development Partnership Companies, Development Boards and Local Community Organisations.
NUI Galway is fully committed to developing and promoting initiatives and programmes which seek to counter disadvantage and social exclusion. The development of the Community Education Centre is one example of the University’s genuine commitment towards advancing the social, economic, educational and cultural needs of the Border, Midlands and Western (BMW) Region.

Communty Education Centre's Vision
The
NUI Galway Community Education Centre promotes the philosophy of Community Development by advocating Community Education as a central mechanism within a wider development process of working in solidarity with marginalised groups towards objectives of empowerment and social justice. At its best Community Education is concerned to overcome the constraints that limit the potential to participate. It aims to develop the capacity of the more marginalised sectors of the community to participate in both decision making and in the social, economic and cultural life of society.
The role of Community Development in encouraging local people to become actively involved in tackling social and economic problems in their communities has been proven effective in recent years and is being increasingly advocated. Many development initiatives are now relying on community development expertise as a basis for their core strategies. However, a range of skills and an understanding of the community development process are required. The
NUI Galway Community Education Centre was established in direct response to this training need. Through the provision of Community Education, incorporating a combination of effective outreach strategies and supporting services, the Centre aims to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of communities and special interest groups.
