Gown Hire for Conferring Ceremony

All students to be conferred must wear the correct Academic Robes as directed by the National University of Ireland: http://www.nui.ie/publications/docs/AcademicDressBooklet.pdf

Students are free to search for academic gowns on their own behalf provided they comply with the Academic Dress Code as above.

The official robemakers for University of Galway are Phelan Conan Ltd.

Phelan Conan Pre-Booking Instructions

Graduands may pre-book their robes using their on-line booking service at www.phelanconan.com. Cost of robe hire is €45.

To prebook online, plese go to http://www.phelanconan.com and select “student hire”.
Select University of Galway and follow the instructions until you receive a reference number.
This reference is your proof of payment so please bring it with you on the day along with photo ID.
When booking online it is essential that you select University of Galway and that you select the correct award that you are to be conferred with - otherwise you may receive the incorrect robe.

Please note: Due to the implementation of a personal 3D secure password during the credit card payment process Phelan Conan Ltd staff are no longer able to take bookings over the phone.
This 3D secure password has been created to protect your online payments and if you don't already have one you can activate it by following the simple instructions during the booking process.
If you experience any difficulties with the 3D secure process, please contact your bank.

'On the Day' Hire

Cost of Hire: €50 (non returnable). No cash will be accepted on the day.

Mortar Boards

When it comes to wearing mortar boards, the same conventions apply to male and female students.

Please note the following from the NUI Academic Dress booklet - Note: Caps are an integral part of academic dress for all those being conferred with the Degrees of Doctor and Higher Doctor.
For all other qualifications the wearing of caps has become optional, although in practice many conferees choose to wear caps.

Return of Robes

Robes must be returned on the same day as you are conferred to The Seminar Rooms GO10/GO11, The Hardiman Research Building (adjacent to James Hardiman Library).
Please confirm the time for return of the robe with Phelan Conan on collection.

Any costs arising from failure to return the robe by the due time are the responsibility of the graduate.
