This module provides an introduction to the study of Antiquity by focusing on the thought and creativity of the earliest knowable European peoples in the lands around the ancient Mediterranean. Lectures are divided into two streams: 'Greek Mythology and the Origins of Western Literature', and 'Introduction to Ancient Greek History'. These series of lectures run in parallel, offering complementary perspectives on literary, intellectual, and political culture.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Listen to the voices of ancient poets and thinkers with understanding and sensitivity.
  2. Use library and web-based resources independently to explore ancient and otherwise unfamiliar cultural data.
  3. Demonstrate an outline knowledge of the chronology and institutions of ancient Greek history.
  4. Read, understand, contextualise, and critically assess selected key sources for ancient Greek history.
