Course Modules
CE2103: Construction Practice
Semester 2 | Credits: 5
This module is concerned with a number of the practical aspects of the design and construction process
including: Surveying Practice (35%), Construction Contracts (5%), Architecture, the Built Environment and
Sustainability (10%), Introduction to Estimates and Costings (25%) , Project Supervision, Health and Safety
(25%).

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the project participants in a civil engineering project and explain their respective roles
- List the contract documents required in tendering for a civil engineering project
- Identify and describe measures needed to ensure health and safety on site
- Correctly assemble a level and a theodolite and know when to adjust the settings of both instruments to ensure that they give accurate readings. Learn how two use both pieces of equipment.
- Use a theodolite to carry out a traverse survey and calculate included angles, whole circle bearings and station co-ordinates from field measurements
- Compute closing errors in a traverse survey and thereby appreciate the unavoidable error that is part of surveying.
- Produce a drawing of a surveyed area.
- Work effectively as a member of a team, as is done in surveying practicals.
- Enhanced learning in practical aspects of the profession such as Estimates and Costings.
- Understand the interaction between architects, civil engineers and other related professions.
- Examine the basic principles of architecture, planning, sustainability and the considerations and common challenges involved in successful design
