Course Modules
DA1100: Topics in Digital Arts and Technology I
Semester 1 | Credits: 10
This module will examine the impact of digital technologies on contemporary life and culture
and pay special attention to the impact of new media on creative arts practice. We will
discuss the diverse ways in which digital artefacts circulate online; explore the centrality of remix culture; examine participation culture and transmedia elements of contemporary
storytelling; discuss meme culture and practice; explore the significance of interactivity in
digital forms of storytelling. Students will participate both in discussion-based seminars and workshop-based practical sessions dedicated to creative learning.

Learning Outcomes
- Examine the history of digital technologies, locating digital art and digital media in relationship to the larger history of media culture and art history.
- Survey and analyse the use of digital technologies in creative practice, including electronic literature and other artistic forms.
- Understand, describe and analyse the history of social communications and media devices in relation to sociocultural values such as portability and connection.
- Examine participation culture, appropriation art, and online viral phenomena such as memes and remix practice.
- Examine interactive media and gain practice in the production of interactive stories and games.
