DEV2100: Comparative Rural Business Development
Semester 2 | Credits: 5
This aim of this module is to provide an understanding to the process of rural economic development. The module starts with Ireland as a case study and then reviews developments in a range of developing countries.
The module begins with a history of rural economic development in Ireland. In the present it reviews economic development on a thematic basis including Towns, Infrastructure, social enterprise and SMEs. The next set of lectures focuses on specific sub-sectors, agriculture, food, energy, marine tourism, the creative economy. It then focuses on governance structures necessary to realise rural economic development. It finishes with a series of international case studies.
The module is quite practice focused drawing upon frontline policy development experience of the module leader.
The module draws upon significant professional experience by the module leader and will involve presentations from guest lecturers with key professional experience.

Learning Outcomes
- Develop an understanding of the historical development of rural economic development in Ireland
- Understand the context of rural economic development on a thematic basis as it relates to Towns, Infrastructure, social enterprise and small and medium enterprises
- Develop an understanding of rural economic development from the perspective of natural resources as it relates to the sub-sectors of, agriculture, food, energy, marine tourism, the creative economy
- Develop an appreciation of governance structures and capacities necessary to support rural economic development
- Compare and contrast development experiences in a range of developing countries
- Develop written and oral communication skills
