DJ6138: Being A Foreign Correspondent
Semester 2 | Credits: 10
This module explores the contemporary international news system. It will examine central news producers and the political and financial forces that shape news content. Issues such as globalization and the digital revolution - and how these are changing traditional news practices - will be assessed. The module will explore the the extent to which international news today is ‘western dominated’; and whether or not new outlets and journalists, such as Al Jazeera, are democratising news flows.

Learning Outcomes
- Assess international newsgathering in a historical context
- Evaluate the political, economic, social and cultural factors that affect what international news is gathered and published
- Appraise the key aspects (ethical, academic and political) relating to international news and the reporting of it
- Evaluate critically accounts of international news and international newsgathering
- Develop a reflective and critical approach to the study of international news and international news gathering
