This module provides the student with an introduction to the health economic analysis of medical device technologies. The student is provided with a comprehensive overview of the distinctive features of medical devices, the regulatory environment for medical devices, and the subsequent challenges for the conduct of health economic methods for the analysis of medical devices for the purposes of informing decision making for health policy and healthcare practice.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Understand the medical device regulatory and reimbursement pathways in the Irish and international context
  2. Identify and apply appropriate health economics methodologies for the appraisal of medical device technologies
  3. Understand the key characteristics of medical device technologies and explore their impact for the application of health economics methodologies
  4. Critically assess published health economics appraisals of medical device technologies.
