This course will be an investigation of the representation of animals in literature and theory, examining how we have conceptualised our relationship with nonhumans throughout our literary history, and examining, more broadly, the history of animals in western thought.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Articulate the relationship between the representation of animals in literature to trends in ethical arguments.
  2. Analyse how our depiction of animals reflects on our own conceptualisation of our place in the world.
  3. Explore a variety of perspectives and theories related to the place of nonhuman animals in the western literary imagination.
