Course Modules
FR105: French
Semester 1 and Semester 2 | Credits: 10
This module aims at consolidating and building on the basic language skills of students who have chosen at entry level to take French as an obligatory and substantial component of their 4-year undergraduate degree programme. Oral and written communication skills are developed progressively and students are introduced to aspects of contemporary French and Francophone culture.

Learning Outcomes
- Students taking FR105 will have completed a programme of revision and reinforcement in the basics of grammar and will be able to identify, conjugate and use appropriate tenses and moods.
- Students will have reflected on the differences in the mechanics of sentence structure between English and French and will have engaged with and practiced the challenge of written translation.
- Through a variety of oral comprehension and expression activities and regular short conversation “appointments” with the Francophone language tutor, students will be able to retrieve information and construct appropriate responses to specific questions. Students will also have worked on pronunciation and intonation.
- Students will have prepared, structured and delivered a number of short oral presentations in front of the class, will have compiled a portfolio of written opinion pieces and will have considerably broadened their vocabulary.
- Comparing and contrasting with different personal experiences and backgrounds, students will have gained an insight into French and French-speaking culture & civilisation and will have been introduced to certain concepts pertaining to the economy and doing business.
- Students will have progressed their skill set in French to level A2.2 / B.1.1 as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
