FS102: Introduction to Film Studies 2: 'Classical Hollywood Cinema'
Semester 2 | Credits: 5
Building on FS 101 Introduction to Film Studies I: Form, FS102 will introduce students to the major issues and debates surrounding the concept of "genre" in film studies. Further to this, by adopting Hollywood cinema as its focal point, this module will provide students with an overview of the generic conventions of individual films by focusing on a different film genre each week. By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate the ability to categorise and evaluate genre films according to accepted generic conventions. They should, in addition, demonstrate an understanding of notions of genre hybridity within individual films and a comprehension of the key debates surrounding genre theory.
