LIB2102: History and the Archive: Understanding Research, Management and Preservation
Semester 1 | Credits: 5
This module will allow students to develop critical and independent research skills, interpretative skills, contextual analysis and digital research strategies through usage of archives and special collections research material. Students will experience an innovative and stimulating introduction to the theory and practice of archives and special collections material, from historic records to the digital age. The module will examine the importance of records and archives and their impact in society, interrogating and trusting archives, as well as linking archives and Special Collections with research. It will enable students to develop new learning techniques and experiences through handling, examining and discovering archival and primary source materials as well as rare printed collections.

Learning Outcomes
- Exhibit a solid understanding of what archives and special collections are: their form, structure, content and importance to research
- Formulate search strategies to reduce ambiguity and develop tactics for navigating analogue and digital access tools
- Use printed materials within a controlled environment, having regard for the preservation needs of the material
- Show awareness of the wealth of resources existing in digitised or other surrogate formats, while maintaining an awareness of their original printed existence
