Semester 1 | Credits: 5

The first year of this course involves an introduction to the workings of the Irish legal system and its influence on health and safety law. As such, the principal common law provisions affecting health and safety were discussed in some detail. The aim of this course is to examine in detail some of the major pieces of legislation governing health and safety standards in the workplace. The international background to the provisions will be discussed where relevant. The legislation in question is detailed below. A significant part of the course will involve an examination of the 2005 Act and other Regulations and other subsequent changes that may occur. Time will also be given to examining the provisions made for vulnerable groups such as the Maternity Regulations and the limited provisions governing those with disabilities. Some other selected pieces of legislation will also be dealt with, in particular the highly significant Construction Regulations and the provisions governing noise and vibration in the workplace.
